It's cherry blossom season! The trees have come alive from the winter slumber and are bathing us with lovely pale pink. Whether you are a pink lover or not, your eyes can't be taken away from the wash of beauty. Going to Washington DC during this time is especially fun, as they put on a wonderful festival. But in Philadelphia there is the Shofuso House, right in Fairmount Park. It is a true Japanese style home and the gardens are filled with bonsai and beautiful koi. It is a must see and experience. Philadelphia has their own festival as well!
As a designer, I love to learn about different architecture and see how people live. The photos below were from my trip to the Shofuso House.
To foster elements of Japanese aesthetic during spring, you can incorporate the following practices and ideas:
1. Simplicity in Decor: Simplify your living spaces by decluttering and focusing on essential items. Use minimalistic decorations with clean lines and natural materials like wood and paper.
2. Embrace Nature: Bring elements of nature indoors by displaying fresh flowers, such as cherry blossoms (sakura), in simple vases or ikebana arrangements. Consider incorporating natural motifs into your decor, such as botanical prints or landscapes.
3. Outdoor Spaces: Create a serene outdoor retreat inspired by Japanese gardens. Incorporate elements like gravel paths, bamboo fences, and stone lanterns. Arrange seating areas with low, comfortable chairs or cushions for relaxation.
4. Sakura Viewing: Take part in the tradition of hanami, or cherry blossom viewing, by spending time outdoors among blooming cherry trees. Pack a picnic and enjoy the beauty of the blossoms with friends and family.
5. Tea Ceremony: Host a traditional Japanese tea ceremony or simply enjoy a quiet moment with a cup of matcha tea outdoors. Use a simple tea set and focus on the ritual of preparing and savoring the tea.
6. Seasonal Cuisine: Explore Japanese spring cuisine by incorporating seasonal ingredients like bamboo shoots, fresh greens, and seasonal seafood into your meals. Focus on simple, elegant presentations that highlight the natural flavors of the ingredients.
By incorporating these practices into your daily life, you can cultivate a sense of tranquility, appreciation for nature, and mindfulness inspired by Japanese aesthetic principles during the spring season.
Happy Spring!
